Franschhoek Lunch Spots: Where to Eat in the Winelands

Franschhoek Lunch Spots: Where to Eat in the Winelands

The best Franschhoek lunches are served on the wine estates themselves, and most of them need a reservation and, increasingly, a deposit. For a long, scenic lunch, look at Haute Cabrière, Rickety Bridge, Arkeste, Orangerie and La Petite Colombe in the valley, and at Babel, Brookdale Bistro or Bosjes Kombuis just beyond it. Below you will find where each one sits, what lunch costs, when the kitchen is open and what to check before you drive out.

TL;DR

  • Book every estate lunch ahead. Several restaurants take a deposit of R200 to R400 per person to hold a table.
  • Expect roughly R490 for a two-course terrace lunch at the accessible end and R1,495 to R1,695 per person for a fine-dining lunch menu.
  • Kitchen days differ: some restaurants close one or two days a week, and many estates take a winter break.
  • Pair one long lunch with one tasting at most. Franschhoek is small, but estate roads and traffic add time.
  • If you would rather not drive, a private driver and a table arranged in advance take the logistics off your day.

How to choose your lunch

Three questions narrow the field quickly.

How long do you want to sit? A fine-dining tasting menu runs two to three hours. A bistro lunch on a terrace can be done in ninety minutes, which leaves time for a cellar visit afterwards.

Who is coming? Children are welcome at most estates, but the rules vary. At Orangerie, children aged eight and older are seated inside, while younger ones may be seated in the tasting room or outside, weather permitting, according to the restaurant's own page. Larger groups face different terms, which we cover below.

What is the weather doing? Many of the best tables are outdoors. Delaire Graff in Stellenbosch, for example, notes that al fresco dining depends on the weather and is generally offered at lunch only. Ask which indoor table you will get if the wind comes up.

The Franschhoek village and estate restaurants

Haute Cabrière

Haute Cabrière serves lunch daily from 12h00 to 15h30 and asks for a R200 per person deposit to secure a reservation. Its terrace menu is the most approachable fine-ish lunch in the valley: two courses for R490 or three for R575. It is a sensible choice for a first Franschhoek lunch, or when the group includes people with very different appetites.

Rickety Bridge

The Restaurant at Rickety Bridge is a seasonal, bistro-style kitchen on Rickety Bridge, R45, using local produce, home-baked breads, cheeses and South African influences. Hours are Monday to Thursday 11:00 to 17:00 and Friday to Sunday 09:00 to 17:00, and the estate is cashless. Bookings of ten or more have a 10% service fee added automatically, so do not tip twice.

For a group with a sense of occasion, the same estate runs a two-hour Potjie Kos Experience for six to 22 guests at R890 per person, including the tutorial, wine tasting and water. It must be booked at least 24 hours ahead.

Arkeste at Chamonix

Arkeste is casual fine dining, à la carte, in a heritage building beside a forest on Chamonix Wine Farm. Lunch runs 12:00 to 14:30 daily, and bookings are essential. A R200 per person deposit applies, corkage is R150 per bottle, and tables of six or more carry a 12.5% service charge. If you plan to bring a special bottle from another estate, that corkage line is worth knowing before you arrive.

Orangerie at Le Lude

Orangerie offers an à la carte menu by Chef Nicolene. Lunch runs Tuesday to Sunday, 11:30 to 15:00, with a R400 per person deposit for lunch and dinner. It also serves morning and afternoon tea with freshly baked treats and a glass of the estate's MCC, which suits guests who want something lighter than a full lunch. Tea must be booked, with at least 24 hours' notice. The vegan menu is three courses at R780 per person, with 48 hours' notice and prepayment. If you are building a meat-free day, these seasonal vegan menu ideas show how much a seasonal approach can offer, and Orangerie's notice period lets the kitchen do exactly that.

Hari Kitchen

Hari Kitchen is the village option when you want to walk between shops and galleries rather than drive. Its published menu includes Sea Base Fish Cake at R157, Coconut Curry at R278, 11 Hours Braised Beef Cheeks at R311 and Cape Malay Malva Pudding at R148. Opening hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday 11:00 to 17:00, and Thursday to Saturday 11:00 to 21:00. It is closed on Mondays, according to its menu page.

La Petite Colombe and Epice

These two sit at the top of the valley's price range and are built around a tasting-style lunch. La Petite Colombe listed its lunch menu at R1,695 per person during 2026. Epice is described as an intimate restaurant with layers of spice-led flavour, and listed its lunch menu at R1,495 per person for the same period. Both prices came with an end date on the official pages, so check the restaurant's current menu when you book.

JAN Franschhoek

JAN Franschhoek, at La Motte, runs a seasonal tasting menu with wine pairing at R3,550 per person. Sunday is the lunch service, while Wednesday to Saturday is dinner, so it only works for lunch on a Sunday, per the estate's page. Treat it as a special-occasion booking and plan well ahead.

Lunch spots just beyond Franschhoek

The Winelands are compact, and some of the best-known tables sit a short drive from the village. If your group wants a different mood from the valley, these are worth the detour.

Babel at Babylonstoren. Babel is a farm-to-fork restaurant in an old cow shed that combines Cape Dutch architecture with contemporary glass walls. Its approach is seasonal food shaped by the garden and a pick, clean and serve philosophy. Lunch is Wednesday to Sunday, 12:30 to 15:00. Groups of 11 to 25 can book a seasonal family-style set menu secured by a 50% deposit. The official page does not list current à la carte prices, so ask when booking.

Bosjes Kombuis. The seasonal farm restaurant at Bosjes, on the R43, has a modern glass-walled building and a deck for outdoor dining with views. Lunch is served daily from 11:30, with last orders at 15:30. It is a good stop if you are combining lunch with the architecture, and the mural of 366 tiles is worth a look.

Brookdale Bistro, Paarl. The bistro serves lunch Tuesday to Sunday, 12h00 to 15h30, according to the estate's contact page.

QUARTZ at Quoin Rock, Stellenbosch. Lunch is Wednesday to Saturday, 12h00 to 15h30, and the kitchen builds its food to complement the estate's wines, which makes it a natural match if you enjoy a considered wine pairing. When you plan one, food and drink pairings are a helpful way to think about which courses suit which glass.

Delaire Graff, Stellenbosch. Lunch is served Monday to Sunday, 12h00 to 14h00, with a shorter window than most, so arrive on time. See the restaurant's page for details.

Mont Rochelle Country Kitchen. Lunch is daily from 12h00 to 17h00 with casual fare, and picnic baskets were listed at R475, or R295 for children, in December 2025, according to InsideGuide. Picnics are a relaxed alternative when you want less ceremony.

Middelvlei, Stellenbosch. A traditional Boerebraai experience was R320 per person in October 2025, according to the estate's menu. It is a hearty, social option for a mixed group.

A cheaper, casual lunch

Not every Franschhoek lunch has to be a sit-down affair. The Franschhoek Village Market runs on Saturdays from 09h00 to 15h00, and prepared food was listed from R40 to R120 per item in 2026, according to Cape Tourism's food guide. It works well as a first stop before an afternoon tasting.

What to check before you book

A few small details decide whether the day goes smoothly.

  1. Kitchen days. Hours differ from restaurant to restaurant, and several close on specific weekdays. Babel serves lunch Wednesday to Sunday only, and Hari Kitchen is closed on Mondays.
  2. Winter breaks. Many estate restaurants close for a few weeks in winter. CapeWinelands.net notes that FABER at Avondale shut from 22 June to 22 July in 2026, and that you should book well ahead for Babel or FABER. Check the estate's own page for the current year's break.
  3. Deposits. Expect R200 to R400 per person at several of the restaurants above. Ask whether the deposit is deducted from the final bill.
  4. Service charges. For large groups, a service charge is sometimes already on the bill, so verify it before adding a gratuity.
  5. Dietary needs. Vegan or special menus can require 24 to 48 hours' notice, as at Orangerie. Mention allergies when you reserve, not at the table.
  6. Payment. Some estates are cashless. Bring a card.

A sample day: one lunch, one tasting, no rush

The most common mistake is stacking too much. Here is a simple shape for a day that works.

  • 09:30: Leave Cape Town after traffic has eased, with a driver so that nobody has to stay sober.
  • 11:00: One cellar visit and tasting, ideally at the estate where you are lunching, so you only park once.
  • 12:30: Lunch, with a table you have already confirmed and paid the deposit on.
  • 15:00 to 16:00: A short stroll through the village or a second, short stop.
  • 16:30: Head back before the evening traffic builds.

Keep the plan this simple and the lunch stays the highlight rather than a stop you hurry through.

Our perspective

The question we hear most is not which restaurant is best. It is how to fit a good lunch into a day that includes a driver, a tasting, a sleeping child or a partner who cannot eat gluten, and still arrive relaxed.

Our view is that the table is only half of it. The other half is the timing: confirming the booking, settling the deposit, matching the kitchen's days to your itinerary and having a driver waiting when the last glass is finished. When we arrange a Winelands day, we start with the people at the table, then choose the estate, not the other way round.

Our network of luxury partners and our discreet, quick response are designed to remove the small frictions: a table moved when the weather turns, a dietary request passed on correctly, a car at the door. That is what we mean by a day that feels effortless.
