VIP Security in Cape Town: A Practical Guide

VIP Security in Cape Town: A Practical Guide

VIP security in Cape Town means a registered close protection team that plans your movements, travels with you and manages risk at each stop, from the airport to dinner to the villa gate. The right provider is licensed with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA), assesses your itinerary before you land, and agrees in writing how you will communicate. This guide explains what is involved, who needs it, how to verify a provider, what shapes the price, and how to fit protection around the rest of your stay.

We are a concierge service, not a security company. What we know well is how a Cape Town itinerary actually runs, and that is where protection either works smoothly or gets in the way.

TL;DR

  • Close protection is a planned service: risk assessment, secure transport, advance checks on venues and a trained team on the ground. It is more than a person standing next to you.
  • Any provider and every officer must be registered with PSiRA. Check this yourself on the regulator's channels before you pay a deposit.
  • Cost depends on team size, hours, vehicles, armed or unarmed cover and how much advance work is needed, so expect a quote built around your itinerary.
  • Many visitors need less than a full team: reputable transport, a vetted driver and sensible habits cover a great deal, and SAPS publishes the basics.
  • Share your schedule early with your protection lead, your driver, your villa or hotel and your concierge, so everyone works from one plan.

What VIP protection in Cape Town involves

The terms "VIP security", "close protection" and "executive protection" overlap. In practice a good engagement has four parts.

Four components of a VIP protection engagement

Assessment. The provider asks who you are, why you are visiting, who knows your plans and what you will do each day. Providers that describe a threat-based approach typically start with risk reports and, for longer stays, a home or villa security review.

Close protection officers. Trained, registered personnel who accompany you, control access, manage crowds and respond to incidents. They may be unarmed or armed, depending on the assessment and the law.

Secure movement. A vetted driver, a suitable vehicle, route planning and a sensible approach to arrivals and departures. This is where most real-world risk sits for visitors, because predictable pick-ups and drop-offs are easy to observe.

Advance work. Someone checks the restaurant, venue, yacht berth or winery before you arrive: entrances, parking, where you will sit, who else will be there.

What it should not be is a loud display. The best teams are discreet, and the point is that nothing noticeable happens.

Who actually needs close protection in Cape Town

Most people enjoying Cape Town do not need a bodyguard. Some situations do justify one:

  • High-profile or high-net-worth guests whose presence is publicly known, or who carry visible valuables and travel with significant luggage.
  • Executives and delegations attending meetings, conferences or site visits on a fixed, publicised schedule.
  • Families with children who want a calm, trained presence during busy days out, especially in unfamiliar places.
  • Groups celebrating, such as weddings, milestone birthdays and festival weekends, where several venues, late nights and a large party raise the level of exposure.
  • Nightlife and event evenings where people are drinking, moving between venues and carrying phones and cards.
  • Long villa stays, where staff, deliveries and a fixed address create a pattern that needs managing.

If none of this describes you, a lighter approach is often enough: private transport you trust, a villa with proper access control, and a concierge who handles bookings so your plans are not shared widely. We come back to that below.

How to check a provider is properly registered

This is the most important step, and it is your responsibility as well as the provider's. A summary of South African private-security law from a compliance firm states that clients are expected to make reasonable enquiries about the legitimacy of a security business and the personnel it deploys before contracting or continuing to use its services.

What PSiRA registration means

PSiRA is the regulator. To register a security business, it requires proof of company registration with the CIPC, tax clearance, VAT registration, a business plan and proof of premises, and directors and managers must hold Grade B registration. Individual officers must be at least 18, permanent residents of South Africa, trained at an accredited centre and free of the scheduled offences listed in the PSIRA Act, according to the same registration division.

Training standards are set by PSiRA as well. Its training division cites Board Notice 102 of 1995 for Grade B to A training and Board Notice 119 of 1998 for special events security.

A verification checklist

  1. Ask for the company's PSiRA registration number and the names and registration details of every officer who will be assigned to you.
  2. Verify them with PSiRA. The regulator says its app lets users verify the status of security officers, businesses and training providers.
  3. Match the person to the paperwork. Ask officers to show their registration card on arrival and check it against what you were sent.
  4. Ask about grade and training. Request the officer's grade and the course that qualifies them for close protection, not just static guarding.
  5. Ask about firearms. If cover is armed, ask for the competency certificate and licence details for each weapon, and confirm the law allows it for your purpose.
  6. Get it in writing. Scope, hours, team size, vehicles, replacement policy and who is liable if something goes wrong.
  7. Check references from clients with a similar profile, handled discreetly.

One caution: PSiRA vets criminal records for new registrants, spending more than R10 million a year on this, but as of March 2025 it did not yet run live continuous vetting against criminal record databases. A valid registration is the minimum, not a full background check. For anyone who will be near your family or your villa, ask the provider how it screens and supervises staff beyond registration.

Red flags

  • No registration number, or reluctance to let you check it.
  • A different officer arriving than the one you were sent.
  • Cash-only payment with no invoice or contract.
  • Vague answers about who is on the team, or promises of absolute safety.
  • A price far below other quotes for the same scope, which usually means untrained or unregistered personnel.

What affects the cost

There is no standard rate card that holds across engagements, and anyone quoting a single flat figure without asking about your itinerary is guessing. The main drivers are:

FactorWhy it changes the price
Number of officersOne officer for a dinner is a different job from a team covering a family and a convoy.
Hours and daysFull days, late nights and multi-day stays are priced differently from short, fixed engagements.
Armed or unarmedArmed cover brings licensing, equipment and insurance requirements.
Vehicles and driversSecurity drivers, armoured or specially prepared vehicles and extra cars for a convoy add cost.
Advance workVenue checks, route surveys and a villa review take time before you arrive.
Notice periodLast-minute requests and peak season (the summer months and festive period) leave less room to choose.
Profile and threat levelA publicly known guest needs more layers than a private executive.

To show how wide the range of security scope can be, a Department of Tourism tender for three years of physical security services drew quotes from R297,600 to R15,979,733.71. That is guarding, not close protection, but it makes the point: price follows scope. At the top end, the national government projected around R2.46 billion for VIP protection of officials in the 2026/2027 financial year, according to a January 2026 parliamentary report, a reminder that full-time protection is a serious, ongoing commitment.

When you request quotes, give each provider the same brief (dates, locations, number of people, armed or unarmed, vehicles) so you can compare like with like.

Our perspective: protection works best when the whole trip is planned around it

We arrange airport transfers, chauffeurs, villa services, dining, yacht days and Winelands tours for guests in Cape Town. From that work, a few lessons come up again and again.

First, most friction is logistical, not dramatic. A protection team that learns at 4 pm that dinner has moved to another restaurant has no time for an advance check. Plans that change quietly cost the team its main advantage, which is preparation.

Second, fewer people should know your movements. Every extra booking made by email, every restaurant told your full name and every unvetted driver adds a link. We handle reservations through a small group of trusted partners and keep your details to those who need them.

Third, discretion beats display. Guests often arrive thinking they need visible muscle, then find that a calm driver, a well-chosen table with a clear exit and a quiet pick-up point do more. Where a risk assessment shows that registered close protection is justified, we are happy to work alongside the team you choose, and you can raise it through our bespoke concierge requests.

Finally, be honest about what you need. We would rather help you travel well with sensible precautions than sell you something you do not need.

Coordinating protection with transfers, villas and plans

Protection only works if every part of the trip shares the same information. Here is how that looks in practice.

Arrival and airport transfers

Arrivals are predictable, which makes them worth planning properly. Share your flight details with your protection lead and your driver together, agree where you will be met, and avoid displaying your name in a crowded hall if you can. Our airport transfers are arranged in advance with flight monitoring in mind, and if you have a security team they can brief the driver on the route. For comparison, executive travel services elsewhere work on the same principle of fixed-price executive airport travel with licensed, checked drivers and meet-and-greet, which is the standard to expect.

Daily movement

A private chauffeur who knows the city, the traffic patterns and the quiet entrances saves time and removes a decision from your security team. Agree one point of contact for same-day changes. Our transfers and chauffeur service is built around a single coordinator who can pass changes to everyone at once.

Your villa or holiday home

For stays on the Atlantic Seaboard or in a private villa, the questions are about access: who has keys and codes, which staff and deliveries are expected and when, and where the safe room or secure area is. Our villa and accommodation concierge and villa services can arrange housekeeping, chefs and deliveries on a schedule your team knows, so no unexpected visitors arrive at the gate.

Dining, nightlife and events

Nightlife is where visitors most often relax their guard. Book ahead, tell the venue only what it needs to know and ask for a table with sight of the entrance. We arrange restaurant reservations and evenings out with timings your driver and team can plan around. For larger groups, share the guest list limits and venue details in advance.

Winelands, yachts and day trips

Longer journeys out of the city need a route plan, a fuel and rest stop plan and a plan for phone coverage. On the water, ask who is on the crew and what safety equipment is aboard. Our Cape Winelands experiences and yacht charters are timetabled so your team knows exactly when and where you will be.

Safety and communication arrangements to agree

Before day one, settle the following with your protection team, your driver and your concierge.

  • One lead contact. A single person who receives itinerary changes and passes them on.
  • Check-in rhythm. How often the team confirms with you, and what a missed check-in triggers.
  • Code word or signal. A simple way to say you want to leave a venue without explaining why.
  • Emergency numbers. SAPS lists 10111 for police emergencies and the South African Tourism helpline on 083 123 6789. Save both, plus your provider's control room and your embassy or consulate.
  • Rules on valuables. The same SAPS page advises using reputable transport, avoiding ostentatious displays of valuables and sticking to well-lit areas. Leave jewellery and spare passports secured at the villa.
  • Medical plan. The nearest private hospital to each location and who will take you there.
  • Social media. No live posting of locations. Delay photos until you have moved on.
  • Children. Who they stay with, and which adults are cleared to collect them.

For a client with no security team, the same list still helps. Replace the protection lead with your driver and concierge.

FAQ

Yes, provided the provider and each officer are registered with PSiRA and the engagement complies with South African law. Armed cover carries additional licensing requirements. Check registration yourself before agreeing anything.

How do I know a security company is genuine?

Ask for its PSiRA registration number and the names of the officers to be deployed, then verify both with the regulator, which offers an app for checking officers and businesses. Insist on a written contract and an invoice. Refuse any provider that will not let you verify.

How much does VIP protection cost in Cape Town?

It depends on the number of officers, hours, vehicles, armed or unarmed cover, advance work and the season. Providers should quote against a written brief of your itinerary. Be wary of unusually low quotes.

Do tourists really need close protection?

Most do not. Reputable transport, secure accommodation and the precautions SAPS publishes cover the needs of many visitors. Close protection makes sense for high-profile guests, executives on a public schedule, large celebrating groups and long stays with significant exposure.

Can a concierge arrange security for me?

A concierge can coordinate transport, villas, venues and timings around your security team, and pass your requests to the right people. Appointing and verifying the security provider remains your decision, so use the registration checks above.
